Securing private sector funds

  1. How can I find private support for my program or project?

Members of the Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) team are available to discuss your project and help you find the most viable potential funders with the most accurately matching interests and guidelines. Be prepared to give a brief description of your project and state the goals, amount of funding sought, and timeline. Also, think about how your program is distinctive and adds value to your scholarly area, the university's mission and the larger community.

  2. Can someone assist me with developing my proposal?

CFR can help review your proposal with regard to clarity, format and the overall terms of the request. Work with your unit's budget officer to develop the budget and budget narrative. Talking with colleagues who have received support from the same prospective funder also can be very valuable.

  3. How do I get a letter of support or the President's signature on a Terms of Agreement for my proposal?

CFR will coordinate and facilitate this process. A draft of the letter or terms of agreement and supporting documents must be submitted for review. Under the direction of the Vice President for Development, the team forwards the revised letter of support or the original terms of agreement for the President's signature. The Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations will perform requested follow-up for more information or clarification on behalf of university executives.

  4. Where can I find copies of the university's 501(c)3 status, the most recent audit, annual report or list of the Board of Governors?

CFR has these documents on file and provides copies upon request.

  5. What is an FES, and where can I find it?

An FES is a Form for External Support that helps the university keep track of private and federal funding requests across campus. You will need to fill out an FES and get the required departmental or university signatures before submitting your proposal. You can find this document and accompanying instructions in electronic format either in the Forms part of this Web site or at http://www.spa.wayne.edu/forms/index.php (under SPA Internal Forms).

  6. How do I find sponsorship for an event?

First of all, please make sure that the event is a priority for your unit. If so, be prepared to discuss the items outlined in question #3. Other issues to keep in mind are the fair market value of items and privileges associated with the sponsorship. Together, the Corporate and Foundation Relations team and the Major Gift Officer assigned to your unit will be able to assist you with event sponsorship.

  7. My quest for private sector funding was successful. What do I do now that I received a check?

CFR can help you request the establishment of an account. You will need to provide the CFR staff in Beecher House with copies of the award letter, FES, proposal and budget, and check and we will complete the procedure to establish the account.
