Anthony Wayne Society

Anthony Wayne portraitRecognizing the lifelong commitment of its leading donors and their role in making the University one of the nation's pre-eminent urban research institutions, Wayne State established the Anthony Wayne Society in 1971. A gift or pledge to support Wayne State University is recognized in the Anthony Wayne Society at the following levels:

  • The Legends Circle — $25 million
  • The Founders Circle — $10 million
  • The Governors Circle — $5 million
  • The Presidents Circle — $1 million
  • The University Society — $500,000
  • The 1868 Society — $250,000
  • The Heritage Society — $100,000
  • The Cornerstone Society — $50,000
  • The Charter Society — $25,000
  • Members — $10,000

Membership in the Anthony Wayne Society is open to donors who support designated funds at any of our schools or colleges, as well as those who contribute undesignated gifts to support the area of greatest need for the university. Contributions to any and all programs are added together to determine the level of recognition.

Qualification for membership

Anthony Wayne Society recognition is based on a donor's total giving history. Major gifts of cash, securities, real estate, planned gifts and corporate matching gift dollars are used to determine the donor's level of recognition.

Whether supporters create an endowed fund for student scholarships at a specific college or provide the University's President with unrestricted gifts to capitalize on education and research opportunities, major contributions mark Wayne State University as a university of distinction. Every gift you make to any university fund is tallied to determine your AWS recognition level.

Donor benefits and activities

The most important benefit is the satisfaction you receive by helping to support Wayne State University with a tax-deductible contribution. Students, faculty and programs within every school and college thank you for your investment in the Wayne State community.

As leadership donors, Anthony Wayne Society members receive regular communication from the university's president and have the opportunity to participate in special university-wide events. The society provides a means to bring together those who have expressed a common interest in the mission and future of the university.

The Anthony Wayne Society meets each fall at a donor recognition ceremony called Charter Night. New members and donors who have increased their commitment to higher society levels are inducted into the society's various recognition groups and presented to the university president. The black-tie gala also provides an ideal opportunity for loyal alumni and old friends to rekindle relationships. Charter Night is an opportunity to discuss the university's plans and initiatives, as well as to receive first-hand information about university activities and programs.
