New scholarship for students involved in community service
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan have come together to fund the Honorable Gerald E. Rosen Scholarship for Community Commitment. This scholarship recognizes Judge Gerald E. Rosen and the contributions he has made to the Detroit community, particularly during the city's period of bankruptcy. The scholarship will recognize and support Wayne State students who show commitment to community service.
Judge Rosen has dedicated his life to serving the community. He is Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and has faced many complex and controversial issues throughout his career. He served as chief mediator during the Detroit bankruptcy proceedings, leading the city through the largest municipal bankruptcy in our nation's history. During the bankruptcy, he helped resolve the Detroit Institute of Arts settlement, commonly referred to as the Grand Bargain, preserving this historical institution.
Judge Rosen teaches at Wayne State University Law School and other universities across Michigan. He has served on the United States Judicial Conference Committee on Criminal Law and on the Boards of Directors for the Federal Judges Association, Focus: HOPE and the Michigan Chapter of the Federalist Society. The Honorable Gerald E. Rosen Scholarship will support Wayne State University students who share his passion for community wellbeing.
The scholarship is new this academic year. Any full-time undergraduate or graduate student is welcome to apply. Applicants must submit a 1 - 2 page essay outlining a significant positive contribution they have made through leadership or volunteer service to a charitable organization or program serving Detroit residents. Financial need is not required.
